Justice, Heritage, & Preservation

Promotional display for American Legion Cathay Post 384’s exhibition Justice, Heritage, & Preservation

Closed 5/30/2026

American Legion Cathay Post 384’s exhibition Justice, Heritage, & Preservation explores heritage, systemic oppression, and national identity through the story of Wong Kim Ark and his landmark 1898 Supreme Court case that established birthright citizenship in the United States. Drawing from historical materials, research, and artwork, the exhibition examines the ongoing impact of Wong Kim Ark's fight for belonging and civil rights.

On May 26, the Veterans Gallery hosted a special reception and panel discussion featuring sculptor Alicia Ponzio, Wong Kim Ark's descendants Norman and Sandra Wong, and researchers from the Stanford Center for Racial Justice. Together, they discussed the Wong Kim Ark Bronze Bust Project and the historical research supporting the exhibition.
